Sanding vs. Bonding Primer: What Actually Works on Glossy Thrift-Store Furniture

A dresser from Goodwill, $40, solid wood, good bones — and a factory finish so glossy you can see your reflection in it. You've already picked out the paint color. Now you're in the paint aisle staring at sandpaper grits and primer cans, trying to figure out which step you can skip.

The internet will tell you two things: sand it, or use a bonding primer. Neither answer is wrong, exactly. But both answers leave out the variable that actually decides whether your paint job lasts six months or six years. The variable nobody talks about is what that glossy surface is made of — and whether sanding it might release something you don't want in your lungs.

Here's the thing most guides won't say upfront: the sanding-versus-primer debate is built on a false choice. The right question isn't which one to do. It's what your specific piece of furniture requires — and that depends on the substrate, the finish chemistry, and the age of the piece.

Know What You're Painting Before You Touch It

Thrift-store furniture falls into three broad categories, and each one changes the prep math. Solid wood pieces — dressers, nightstands, dining chairs from the 1960s through 1990s — typically wear a lacquer or varnish topcoat. These finishes are glossy but porous enough that a scuff sand creates mechanical grip. Laminate and thermofoil pieces, the kind that dominated affordable furniture from the 1990s onward, are a different animal entirely. Their surface is plastic — melamine or vinyl — with zero porosity. Paint has nothing to bite into.

Most people ask, "Should I sand or prime?" The better question is what that glossy surface is actually made of — because laminate, lacquered wood, and lead-painted pieces each demand a different prep sequence.

If the piece was built before the federal lead paint ban, sanding it dry sends lead dust airborne. Benjamin Moore specifically recommends STIX for laminate furniture, noting that it "offers powerful adhesion properties to any surface, even shiny ones like laminate."[3]

The real choice isn't sanding or primer — it's whether your surface needs mechanical grip, chemical grip, or both.

So when does bonding primer win outright? Three situations.

The scuff sand creates physical texture. The bonding primer creates chemical adhesion. Together they cover each other's failure modes. If dust or oils compromised a spot during cleaning, the primer catches it. The time math: scuff-sanding a dresser takes 10 to 15 minutes. Brushing on one coat of bonding primer takes another 15. You're adding maybe half an hour to a project that already spans a weekend with drying times between coats. When Neither Approach Is Safe

Before you leave the hardware store, grab 220-grit sandpaper and a quart of shellac-based bonding primer. The two together cost under $40, and having both means you can adjust your approach after you test the surface at home.

If negative, clean the surface with a degreaser, scuff-sand until uniformly dull, wipe down with a tack cloth, and apply one thin coat of bonding primer. Within the week: after your topcoat cures, check the high-wear areas — drawer edges, tabletop corners, anywhere two surfaces meet.
