Here's the unglamorous truth: most hardware swaps fail. Not because people pick ugly pulls. Because the three things that determine whether a piece reads "custom" or "thrift-store with new knobs" are proportion, hole precision, and finish durability. And most online advice skips all three.
Get the scale wrong and a 5-inch pull on a 30-inch drawer looks like a typo. Get the holes off by a sixteenth of an inch and the misalignment is visible from across the room. Buy zinc-alloy hardware with a brass coating and the finish degrades before the year is out.
Measuring What You Have (And What You're Buying)
Before you order anything, you need one number: the center-to-center distance between the existing screw holes. This measurement determines whether new pulls will fit without filling and redrilling holes, which is the single biggest time-sink in any hardware swap.
Center-to-center, sometimes labeled "CC" or "bore spacing" on product pages, is the distance from the center of one mounting hole to the center of the other. Not edge to edge. Not overall length. Most hardware at big-box stores is zinc alloy with a plated finish. It looks fine on the peg hook. The problem shows up months later.
Zinc alloy is a die-cast material made mostly of zinc with small amounts of aluminum, magnesium, and copper. It's cheap to manufacture and takes plating well initially. The finish you can't fix later: anything labeled "antique" or "oil-rubbed" on a sub-$5 pull. Those effects are applied as a surface treatment over zinc and they wear unevenly, producing blotchy patches rather than uniform aging.
Installation: Where "Updated" Becomes "Upgraded"

And if the existing holes are already stripped, filling with wood glue and toothpicks works for a single hole. For multiple stripped holes across several drawers, the repair compounds. At that point you're committing to filling, redrilling, and refinishing every drawer face. Know that before you unscrew anything.
Before you decide to keep the original hardware, check three things. Is the piece veneered particleboard with drawer fronts thinner than half an inch? Is it a recognizable mid-century maker like Drexel or Lane with era-specific pulls? Are multiple screw holes already stripped? One "yes" tips the scale toward keeping what's there, or at least toward lighter knobs instead of heavy bar pulls.
If your existing hole spacing is 3 inches or 3-3/4 inches, buy pulls that match. Stay in the 1/3 proportion range for the drawer width. Choose solid brass or stainless if the piece gets daily use; zinc alloy is fine for a guest-room dresser that opens twice a year. Use a jig for any holes you drill fresh.
If your spacing is non-standard or the piece is stained wood, try cleaning and polishing the original hardware before you commit to filling and redrilling. The swap may not be worth the time.
